Coconut Pound Cake

Ingredients
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable shortening
5 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup fresh or frozen coconut
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
Instructions
Cream sugar and add shortening.
Add eggs, one at a time, and beat after each addition. Beat at least 1 minute after adding each egg.
Add vanilla.
Sift flour, salt and baking powder together.
Add flour, buttermilk and coconut to sugar-egg mixture.
Put in tube pan and bake 1 hour at 325 F degrees
Shortly before removing cake from oven, combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water. Boil 1 minute. Remove cake from oven and pour sugar mixture over cake while hot.
